DR JOHN DEMARTINI - Updated 1 day ago
In my researching, teaching, and coaching, I have seen many people faced with challenges in one or many of the seven areas of their lives - spiritual, intellectual, business, finance, family, social, and physical health and well-being.
Over the years, I've developed tools and methodologies to help people break through these boundaries one of which is the Demartini Method, which I teach as part of my signature 2-day Breakthrough Experience program.
What is the Demartini Method?
In essence, the Demartini Method is a powerful coaching methodology that involves balancing the mathematical equation of perceptions so you can experience greater executive function, objectivity, inspiration, appreciation, fulfilment, and intrinsic drive.
What makes it unique is that it is a systematic, predetermined series of questions that you answer that will help to neutralize and dissolve emotional baggage, so it no longer weighs you down. Instead, you can experience integrated feelings of presence, certainty, gratitude and love.
I often use the example that when you point a finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you. It’s an analogy for your own awareness of what you see in others you have inside you to the same degree. You’ll tend to resent traits in others that you are too proud to admit are in you and admire traits in others that you are too humble to admit in yourself. And, as long as you’re too proud or too humble to admit what you see in others is also inside you, you’re unable, at least in those moments, to be your true authentic self.
In other words, the series of questions that make up the Demartini Method are designed to help you become conscious of what you've previously been unconscious of - allowing you to uncover the hidden order within the apparent chaos that may be underlying many of the challenges you face in life.
One area where this method is particularly powerful is in the business world.
The Demartini Method was originally geared at helping individuals maximize their awareness and effectively resolve conflicts - both within themselves and in their relationships with others.
In the workplace, for example, you may have experienced challenges with employees. You may have hired an employee who is not as engaged as you had hoped they would be. Perhaps you didn’t identify their highest values in the interview process and didn’t ensure there was a congruency between what they would be doing in the job description and what was most important to them. As such, they may not be inspired, intrinsically driven, and produce what you had hoped.
So, one application of the Demartini Method is to help you stabilize any emotions and subjective biases in the interview process itself, allowing you to be more equitable and objective when hiring people.
Another powerful application is in resolving workplace conflict. The Demartini Method can help you neutralize emotional charges, resentments, and perceptions you may hold toward employees who appear not to meet your expectations - and whom you may be judging or resenting as a result.
It may be helpful to think of a time in your professional or personal life where you've been resentful of somebody. These resentments can occupy space and time in your mind, run your life, create intrusive thoughts and make it difficult to sleep at night.
You may also recall a time when you were infatuated with an employee who you perceive to be overproducing and exceeding your expectations. This too can occupy space and time in your mind.
In other words, anything you put on a pedestal or in a pit can take up real estate in your head and distract you.
If you resent someone, you tend to be conscious of their downsides and unconscious of their upsides. If you infatuate with someone, you tend to be conscious of their upsides and unconscious of their downsides.
The Demartini Method is designed to bring you back into equilibrium and hold yourself accountable to see both sides objectively.
Instead of functioning from Systems 1 thinking, which is emotionally charged thinking, when you balance your perceptions, you function from Systems 2 thinking that allows you to think before you emotionally react. It allows you to be more objective, respectful and stable, while also being less emotional and volatile. It allows you to see things as they are, and not as you may skew them with your subjective thinking and emotional biases.
The Demartini Method can help you open up channels for more effective communication.
The Demartini Method is a powerful tool to help you own what you see in others. In doing so, it helps you calm down any pride, shame and judgment, and communicate objectively and respectfully.
It can also help you navigate any feelings of intimidation and subordination to other leaders.
You might attend a sales pitch, interview, or conference and feel intimidated by qualities you perceive in others. The Demartini Method can be incredibly effective in pre-emptively levelling the playing field, helping you see yourself as an equal among everyone in the room. It enables you to identify within yourself the very traits, actions or inactions that you admire in others, so instead of feeling intimidated, you become present, purposeful, and powerful - able to engage in meaningful dialogue rather than feeling intimidated and walking on eggshells.
The Demartini Method can also elevate your leadership skills - particularly if you find yourself unwisely comparing yourself to those you admire. When you put someone on a pedestal and become infatuated with them, you tend to minimise yourself, often because you're too humble to recognise that what you see in them also exists within you. This can lead you to not act according to your own strategies in favor of adopting the ideals, values, and approaches of others. The result is often chaos and confusion, as you drift out of alignment with your own highest values - compromising both your integrity and authenticity.
Every symptom in business is ultimately a feedback mechanism, guiding you towards achieving sustainable fair exchange and authenticity.
The Demartini Method is a structured, scientific approach to creating just that. When you apply the Method to someone you’re judging in any way, you’ll find that, by the time you complete it, your respect, communication, appreciation, and even love for that individual increases. The dialogue shifts, and so does your perspective.
Peter Lynch, renowned investor and author of One Up on Wall Street, once shared how, after completing his quantitative and technical analysis, he would fly to a company’s headquarters to observe the human dynamics within it. He looked for key indicators: people who were grateful for their jobs, inspired by the mission, aligned with the vision, enthusiastic, present, and confident in their skills. These six qualities were his markers for whether a company would increase in value.
The Demartini Method is designed to cultivate those very qualities in both individuals and groups of individuals within organisations by helping people be more engaged, feel grateful, help them love, become inspired, and be more enthused.
It also helps you become more certain and less volatile, emotional, or uncertain by transforming unconscious, missing information into conscious awareness. In doing so, it assists you in becoming more present - rather than being distracted by lower animal-like impulses, instincts, infatuations, resentments, and judgments.
The Demartini Method is a science that, if followed to the letter, can guarantee you equanimity within yourself, which is stable. It takes you out of the subcortical amygdala function, which is a deep nucleus of the brain, and puts you into the cortical executive function, where you have self-governance. So, it is a science of self-mastery. It is a science of more respectful communication.
When using the Demartini Method, you’ll find that you’ll be able to perceive people and events more objectively. You’ll be able to use your executive function and access your forebrain, allowing you to have foresight, strategically plan, mitigate risk, transform fantasies into true objectives, and communicate more respectfully with other people - so you're more likely to have sustainable fair exchange with the people and in the interactions and transactions you have with them.
It can also help you manage money more effectively.
If you’ve experienced a big gain, the Demartini Method can help you calm down the infatuation or elation. If you've had a loss, it can help you stabilize that too. It addresses anything that disturbs your emotions and distracts you. So, any distraction at work - whether it’s the gain or loss of a customer, or any other type of gain or loss - the Method is designed to help you dissolve the emotional charge and remain focused.
I work with people in business, including those in trading and finance - options trading, currency trading, and other forms of market trading - and they use the Demartini Method to stabilize their productivity. It helps them avoid getting elated or saddened about what they’ve gained or lost, and allows them to maintain a steady, focused state of mind.
Now, some people thrive on drama – so, if you’re looking for drama, then don’t use the Method. The Demartini Method is designed to DISSOLVE the various forms of drama in your life and bring you back to reason and objectivity, ensuring that you return to your executive function.
I’ve found that people who are more objective tend to go farther in life than those who are highly emotionally reactive and subjectively biased. As Warren Buffett says, “Don’t expect to manage money if you can’t manage your emotions.” And as Robert Greene has pointed out in the context of business, you can’t lead others if you can’t manage yourself.
Self-governance is rooted in your executive function - it’s a governing system that calms the volatility and distractions of the amygdala and allows you to remain centred. The Demartini Method is a science designed to help you be more objective, aiding in your having greater levels of self-governance.
It’s a series of very precise questions that bring into conscious awareness what you've previously been unconscious of. It allows you to see both sides of events, to see everything in your life as being on the way, not in the way, and so you can have gratitude, love, inspiration, enthusiasm, certainty, and presence.
I’ve been teaching the Dematini Method through my signature programme, The Breakthrough Experience, for nearly four decades. In that time, I’ve worked with more than 150,000 individuals, many of them entrepreneurs and business leaders. Once they learn the methodology, they begin to apply it across all areas of life - and most say they can’t imagine functioning without it. While its full significance may not always be clear at first, over time its wide-ranging applications become undeniable.
The Demartini Method can help transform both your personal and professional life. I’d love for you to join me at my next 2-day Breakthrough Experience programme, where I’ll guide you step by step through the Demartini Method and help you clarify your highest values - so you can live and lead with greater purpose, power, and presence.
