Can You Live Without Judgment?

You are unlikely to go through an entire day without making a judgment. The more meaningful question is: What can you do when you find yourself in judgment?

Throughout your life, you've accumulated experiences that your brain (specifically your subcortical amygdala) has assigned a valency to. You may perceive experiences as positive or negative, supportive or challenging. These experiences are stored as episodic memories, and when you receive information through your senses in the present, you associate what you're experiencing with episodic memories of what you perceived happened in the past.

Based on these associations, you’re either instinctually driven to avoid or impulsively driven to seek.

If you perceive something as having more positives than negatives, you'll probably seek it, look for it and try to bring it into your life. If you perceive it as having more drawbacks and negatives, you'll probably withdraw from it and try to keep it out of your life.

So you're going to be making judgments throughout the day based on the associations you've made.

But there is a way to transcend a judgment.

Seeing Both Sides Can Transcend Judgment

If you can transcend the label, the judgment and the positive and negative valency you've given something, and see it as simultaneously positive and negative, you move from seeing it as either positive or negative to seeing both sides at once.

In other words, it's neither simply positive nor simply negative.

In that moment, you transcend the judgment.

You activate your medial prefrontal cortex and spontaneously act, rather than simply reacting to something you want to seek or avoid. It becomes a spontaneous act rather than an evoked reaction.

why we judge

This can be a moment of grace, love, inspiration, enthusiasm and certainty.

There is no wavering because you're no longer seeing only one side.

When you're seeking something because you've perceived it as positively valent, you're blind to the downsides. When you're avoiding something because you've perceived it as negative, you're blind to the upsides.

When you see both sides simultaneously, you're not blind.

You're aware.

You're fully conscious.

You're awake.

What Happens When You Transcend Judgment?

When you see both sides simultaneously, you have the capacity to be present.

You're not trying to avoid something and get something ‘better’ in the future. You're not trying to avoid something associated with a memory from the past. You're not caught up in seeking or avoiding.

You're present.

In that moment, you're in a state of grace. You can experience certainty and inspiration. You may experience a tear of gratitude or a moment of authenticity.

You can experience what I would describe as being of the soul, a state of unconditional love.

You're no longer in judgment and caught in that internal strife.

But that moment can be fleeting.

It is a moment of gnosis, a moment of knowledge and epistemological awareness. It is there, but it doesn't endure past the moment of integrated perception.

You may have an aha or a eureka moment, a gamma synchronicity in the brain, because you're seeing things as they more objectively and actually are rather than as you subjectively perceive them to be when you're judging.

Why You Can't Permanently Eliminate Judgment

You may transcend one judgment, but that doesn't mean you're finished.

The moment you transcend one judgment, you're automatically promoted to the next illusion, the next mystery, the next thing you don't know.

Whatever you know, there's something beyond it that you don't know.

In that unknown, there is something unconscious. There is a question and a mystery to solve.

As you gain knowledge and learn to ask questions and go through inquiry, you can begin to see both sides simultaneously and solve the unknowns.

It's like solving for X in a mathematical equation. You find the missing information and the unknown, and you move from that uncertainty into a greater awareness.

You return to grace again.

Then you get promoted to the next illusion.

You encounter another unknown. You experience uncertainty again. You ask questions, solve the problem, balance the equation and see both sides simultaneously.

You see that it's neither simply positive nor negative.

And you return to that state of grace again.

This process continues.

Use Judgment as Feedback

So you're not going to permanently get rid of judgment.

You're going to use judgment as feedback to let you know you have an incomplete awareness.

You may be trapped in a reality that is skewed, distorted and generalized. But you can use that judgment as a tool to learn to ask quality questions.

In my Breakthrough Experience seminar program, I present the Demartini Method, which is a series of very precise questions to help you become fully conscious of what you're unconscious of and judging, and to help you transcend that.

But you're not done.

You still have more growth ahead of you.

Stay Curious About What You Don't Know

If you meet somebody who claims to be completely aware or completely enlightened, I don't believe they are.

They only know what they know. They're only aware of what they're aware of and what they've experienced in life.

To say that they're universally aware would be an ego trip of unbelievable magnitude.

Instead, I believe in holy curiosity.

Tackle the next challenge, problem or mystery.

Allow yourself to go into the unknown. Experience the judgment and use the judgment as a feedback mechanism to guide you to ask questions, solve the mystery of the unknown and become fully conscious again.

That's the journey.

Penetrating New Mysteries Is Fulfillment

If you don't continue this process, you stagnate. You stay stuck in a particular current judgment.

But you can continue to live with holy curiosity and keep growing as you answer the mysteries that arise.

Penetrating new mysteries is fulfillment.

Staying stuck in a belief system and holding onto a valent perception can trap you and hold you back.

That's why I believe there is merit in approaching this as a scientific inquiry to solve the next mystery and in believing that there is some sort of hidden order in the chaos to keep you on the journey.

So give yourself permission to allow yourself to judge.

Then use it to guide you into a moment of grace when you see the order.

Then go to another disorder (judgment – missing information).

See the grace.

And just keep going.

Keep living.

Keep fulfilling.

Keep penetrating ever greater mysteries.

Key Takeaways

  • You're not going to go through life without experiencing judgment.
  • Judgment is influenced by the positive or negative valency you've assigned to experiences.
  • When you perceive something as positive, you can become blind to its downsides.
  • When you perceive something as negative, you can become blind to its upsides.
  • Seeing both sides simultaneously allows you to transcend the judgment.
  • A moment of grace (poise) can arise when you're fully present and no longer caught in seeking or avoiding.
  • Judgment can be used as feedback that your awareness is incomplete.
  • Asking quality questions can help you investigate the unknown and solve the mystery.
  • There is always another mystery beyond what you currently know.
  • Holy curiosity allows you to continue growing, learning and penetrating ever greater mysteries.

Take the Next Step

You are not able to eliminate judgment from your life, but you can learn to use it wisely.

When judgment arises, you can use it as feedback that your awareness is incomplete. Through inquiry, you can explore the unknown, see both sides simultaneously and transcend the judgment (momentarily before your next promotion to your next judgment).

The Demartini Method, presented in the Breakthrough Experience, provides a series of precise questions to help you become fully conscious of what you're unconscious of and judging, and to help you transcend it.
