If you are inspired to learn more about gaining self-mastery, taking command of your life, and being both the captain of your ship and master of your fate, then you may be surprised, but inspired to learn that it all begins in your brain.

I’ve spoken quite a bit about the lower and the higher functioning, of the less and more advanced parts of the brain in recent broadcasts, blog articles, and seminars; together with how identifying your highest values and living congruently with them fast tracks your journey to self-mastery and fulfillment.

Allow me to briefly recap.

The medial prefrontal cortex of the forebrain (also referred to as the “executive functioning center”)

All humans have a forebrain, which is the most advanced part of the brain. The forebrain is most developed, or enlarged, around 30%, in humans. However, as you go down through the species and back in time, this percentage of the forebrain drops from 30% to 17% to 9% to 5% to 2% and to 1%.

So, one of the things that distinguishes us from other animal species is this development of the executive function in the forebrain, which is able to govern and monitor our more primitive impulses and instincts of survival.

It’s for this reason that the forebrain is often referred to as the thrival center or the evolutionary center, because evolution has shown us that this area of the brain is constantly developing and becoming more enlarged, while also becoming increasingly involved in more and more masterful and executive functions.

The value of values

Every human being including you has a set of priorities, a set of values they’re living their life by.

Whenever you’re living congruently with your highest values and your highest priorities, your blood, glucose, and oxygen go into your FOREBRAIN.

However, when you’re living by your lower values, during survival modes, the blood, glucose, and oxygen go into the subcortical AMYGDALA - the lower functioning part of your subcortical brain.

In other words:

  • If you are living by your highest priorities, you develop your forebrain and your executive function.
  • If you live by your lower priorities, you develop your subcortical region of the brain including the amygdala which leads to a higher degree of animal survival function.

If you are inspired to grow your executive function, self-mastery and self-governance, then living congruently with your highest values and living by priority will awaken and further develop this part of your brain.

This is also the part of the brain that is involved in discipline, reliability, and focus. Concentration and staying focused, having a long-term vision, calming the desire for instant gratification, and having increased space and time horizons are all signs of the executive function at work.

This part of the brain is also involved in waking up creativity, genius, innovation and unborrowed vision.

It's involved in strategic planning, risk mitigation, and the executing of plans. It is also involved in making sure that you have the ability to govern yourself and not let the vicissitudes and volatility of perturbations of others interfere with your main focus in life.

When your executive function is awakened, strengthened and developed, you also tend to have less “noise” in your brain, more clarity of focus, and greater problem-solving abilities.

So, living by your highest priorities and waking up this executive center is an essential component of waking up a life of mastery and being inspired by your life.

As I often ask people, why would you want a quiet life of desperation when you can have a life of inspiration?

How the Demartini Method can help you evolve and grow the executive part of your brain.

The Demartini Method is something I started developing when I was 18.

I happened to read a book by Gottfried Leibniz, a German philosopher and polymath who, together with Sir Isaac Newton, was the co-inventor of calculus.

Leibniz wrote about how there's a higher order that he referred to as a divine perfection, divine order, and divine magnificence in the universe that few people ever get to see, and what happens if they are, in fact, able to see that order.

The reason so few individuals are able to see the magnificent order in the universe is because the majority of them are not living in their executive center, but instead living down in their amygdala.

You can awaken your executive center by knowing the right questions to ask so you can become fully conscious of what Claude Shannon refers to as “missing information”.

I also happened to read the Principles of Quantum Mechanics by Paul Dirac around the same time at the age of 18. I was fascinated by how pairs of opposites - particles and antiparticles - join together to make light. I kept coming back to that, and began wondering what would happen if positive and negative emotions were joined together at the same time - could they result in enlightenment?

At the time, I thought it was a just a naïve metaphor. However, many years of intensive research later, I discovered that this naïve metaphor was instead a profound realization, and something that would later grow into a scientific method that I would teach to hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world to help them transform their perceptions and begin mastering their lives.

  1. The first component of what would later become the Demartini Method was the realization of reflective awareness and transparency. In other words, the realization that what you see in the world and in the people around you, you have inside you.

In my mid-twenties, I found a giant Oxford dictionary and began going through it page by page and listing every possible human behavioral trait that a human being could have. At the time, the total I reached was 4,628 traits that a human being could possibly have.

I then began working through the list – one by one through each of the 4,628 traits, and began asking myself a couple of questions:

  • “Who do I know who is the most extreme example of that behavior?” I would then put their initials next to the relevant trait.
  • “Where have I or do I display or demonstrate that same trait to the same degree?”

I would keep listing examples in my own life until I reached the point where I owned that trait to the same level that I had perceived it in the individual I had originally identified.

This process, while extremely time-consuming, was particularly valuable to me because I realized that I had ALL the traits.

I was kind and cruel, nice and mean, positive and negative, considerate and inconsiderate, peaceful and wrathful, honest and dishonest. I realized I had all the traits I found in that dictionary.

In other words, nothing was missing in me.

I also noticed that once I owned all the traits, I was far less reactive because I could clearly see an example of where and when I had displayed the same trait that excited or upset me.

As such, I was able to ask myself, “Well, who am I to judge them when I have done the exact same behavior?”

This process later become one of the first key elements of the Demartini Method, helping you realize that the seer, the seeing, and the seen are the same, and that what you see in others is also inside you.

As such, you tend to have less to react to, less to point your fingers at, fewer emotional reactions, less of a subcortical amygdala response, and more executive function because of this reflective awareness that you now have.

Many individuals find this first step to be a game changer. As with the majority of human beings, you too may tend to be too proud or too humble to admit what you see in others is also inside you. What you may not know is that the too proud and too humble disowned parts that you have are the things that are most likely to push your buttons.

Everything you disown is what other people tend to run your life with:

  • If you disown the things that you ADMIRE in others, they likely hook you with an infatuation.
  • If you disown the things that you DESPISE in others, they likely hook you with a resentment.

So, if you don't want infatuations and resentments, fantasies and nightmares, and impulses and instincts to distract you so you can activate, strengthen and grow the executive function of your brain, then reflective awareness is a wise place to begin.

The Demartini Method: A Revolutionary New Tool in Modern Psychology

You're about to discover one of the most powerful tools in human transformation

  1. The next step in what was to later become the Demartini Method was to become conscious of how the things you admire have downsides, and the things you despise have upsides.

All events are neutral. As Milton said, within the heaven is the hell, and within the hell is the heaven. And you can make a heaven into a hell and hell into heaven, based on asking questions and becoming cognizant of both sides.

For example, if you look at somebody that you love, you'll likely see that they have things you like and things you dislike. The same inside yourself, your work, your relationships and every other aspect of your life – you’ll have both sides.

However, if you don’t see both sides and honor both sides, you’ll tend to project subjective biases onto them and create moral hypocrisies about them. You'll likely be too humble or too proud to admit what you see in them is inside you, and end up judging them and having them run your life.

Anything you infatuate with or resent occupies space and time in your mind and runs you. That’s the “brain noise” that blocks the signal from the soul, you might say - the calling that you have, and the unique mission you have in life.

By going in there and balancing your perceptions by becoming conscious of upsides to the downsides and downsides to the upsides, you level the playing field instead of storing polarized perceptions in your subconscious mind that can then run your life.

Once your perceptions are balanced, you are more likely to feel love and gratitude for others, and to find hidden order in the chaos. As such, your forebrain comes alive, your executive center is awakened, and you're returned to mastery.

  1. Another step is to neutralize the polarized view you have of people.

You may, as an example, have a perception that your mother was never there for you. Anytime you hear the words, “always” or “never”, you have what is called “infinity over one”, or ‘ one over infinity’, which doesn't exist.

There's no phenomenon that we can identify that with. So, it's likely a skewed, subjective bias; and a distortion of your reality.

In order to dissolve those distortions and hallucinations that you may perceive as being your reality, we ask the question, “Where is the other side of the individual that you're judging?”

This may involve looking at the downsides of someone you admired  – examples of where they exhibited the opposite behavior of that which you admired; or looking at the upsides of someone you resented.

In this particular example, it would involve asking you to describe the many equilibrating times that your mother WAS there for you, and to keep finding examples until you balance the equation.

I've been doing this for decades and many individuals don't believe it's possible until they go through the process and realize that they have been carrying a distorted view of an individual until they used the Demartini Method to bring their perceptions into balance.

When you hold yourself accountable to see the whole of the individual, to see both sides of them and ensure that your perception of them is balanced, you are able to have more love and appreciation for them, and for yourself as the reflection of them.

To Sum Up

The majority of individuals live their lives as automatons reacting to external stimuli, instead of actually being present and letting the voice and the vision on the inside overrule the world on the outside.

As William James said, the greatest discovery of his generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their perceptions and attitudes and mind.

You have the capacity to willfully alter your perceptions.

I have developed a series of questions in the Demartini Method that help you evolve your brain, level the playing field, become present, transformative, adaptive and resilient so you're empowered in life and captaining your own ship instead of being blown off course by constantly reacting to the world around you.

The Demartini Method is a scientific method designed to integrate the brain, to empower your life, and to help you focus on self-mastery.

I believe that the Demartini Method will revolutionize parts of psychology because instead of running a story about how you’re the victim – a story that you have made up in your conscious mind – the Method allows you to see the whole, to wake up your executive center, have self-governance, and no longer be the victim of your history but instead the master of your destiny.
