Like it or not, change is an inevitable and constant part of our lives. Our journey through life involves a series of changes - sometimes we drive the change and at other times we are the recipient of unexpected, sudden and unwanted change such as a death in the family, divorce, the loss of a job or being overlooked for a promotion to a more senior role in the workplace.

The truth of the matter is that most people resist change. Whilst there are many reasons people resist change, a common source of the resistance is fear. It's this fear of change that can leave us feeling anxious, angry, confused, stressed and torn between the need to take action and do nothing at all. Is it any wonder that most of us resist change?
But what is fear? Dr John Demartini describes fear as being an emotion involving a distorted imagination of the future. It arises when you assume that in the near or far future that you are going to experience more pain than pleasure, more loss than gain and more negative than positive.
Sometimes though it's not fear that holds us back, it's our complacency with the way things are. We're comfortable with life as we know it and don't see any need to change. We're reluctant to leave the safe and familiar ‘known' behind and suspicious of the risk and uncertainty of the ‘unknown'. The problem with keeping things ‘just as they are' however, is that we hold ourselves back from an array of new and exciting opportunities.
